22 weeks, 1 day: Rocking and rolling

It finally happened last night.  After several weeks of regular, but unpredictable movement, Baby Sister had a bedtime dance party last night that kept me up past my bedtime.  I didn't mind very much though.  And she's at it again this morning.

20 weeks, 3 days: I remember this part

The part where I have started to feel the baby move ... but not regularly enough to be reassuring.  It's inconsistent enough still to drive me batty.  Oh well, hopefully soon she'll be driving me crazy with the all-night dance parties.

Z's new words this weekend, both remarkably clear: happy and apple.  And he seems to have a special little friend in his class at daycare, Evie ("Ebbie").

19 weeks: It's a girl!!!

The anatomy scan was today, and baby GIRL looks perfect.  We are over the moon.

She's measuring at almost exactly 19 weeks, so maybe a bit smaller than Zack, who was slightly ahead the entire pregnancy.  Even though I'm planning a repeat c-section, I don't think I'll mind delivering a baby slightly smaller than 8.5 pounds!

All major organs and structures looked healthy.  We are so excited and relieved!  In fact, things looked so good, they don't want to see us again until early December, instead of in 4-6 weeks.  If she's on track then, we might only get that one peek at her before her arrival.  Speaking of her arrival, they're currently planning to let me go the full 39-40 weeks.  Aaack!  I was hoping to be halfway done today.  Perhaps she'll decide on her own to make her debut closer to 38 weeks.  If you're keeping track, I think the doc only mentioned my age twice today.

And here's the mama, yesterday evening after teaching (hence the very tired), at 18 weeks, 6 days.  I'm guessing I'm still running about four weeks ahead of my belly size with Zack.  This looks much more like I did at 22-23 weeks last time, even though the baby is measuring a bit smaller!

Pink or blue?

The big anatomy scan is Thursday, at exactly 19 weeks.  I'm trying hard not to think about the fact that they're really looking to see if anything is scary with the heart, lungs, brain, GI tract, etc.  It's going to be fun!  So is it a boy or a girl?  Let's take a look at some old wives' tales:

1. Carrying high or low?  If low, it's a boy.  This was true with Zack.  Too soon to tell with this one.
2. Beauty stealing?  Acne means a girl.  This was true with Zack -- my skin was flawless.  And it's a mess this time.  Prediction: girl
3. Heart rate?  Over 140, it's a girl.  I feel like Zack's was always higher than this, but I don't have any records.  This baby has definitely been in the 150s.  Prediction: girl
4. Cravings?  Sweets mean a girl.  With both pregnancies, my cravings have been for salt.  But with Zack, I actually had an aversion to sweets.  I am certainly more receptive to sweets this time.  Prediction: unclear
5. Chinese gender predictor.  Zack was predicted to be a girl.  Prediction: boy
6. Mayan gender predictor.  Zack was predicted to be a girl.  Prediction: girl
7. Is the hubster gaining weight?  If so, it's a girl.  He lost weight with Zack.  This time?  Prediction: girl
8. Morning sickness?  The more sick, the more likely to be a girl.  I had it pretty easy with Zack, and it was definitely worse this time.  Prediction: girl

So ... Zack was 5-2 boy (with one no result from the heart rate test).
This one ... 5-1 girl (with two no results).

Any guesses?

I'm starting to feel those fluttery movements -- so exciting!

16 weeks, 6 days

By my calculations, the baby is now the size -- length and weight -- of my iPhone.

First belly pic

So here I am earlier this week, at 15 weeks, 3 days:
I'm afraid I'm already as big as I was four weeks later with Zack!  You can also tell how much more tired I am this time.  Two years and a toddler makes a difference.  Wow.

Low risk

We knew things looked good based on the last ultrasound, but we got reassuring blood work today.  Our risk of Down Syndrome is 1 in 3500, even better than with Zack (1 in 800).  And our chance of the other trisomies is 1 in 2400.  At my age, the normal risk would be 1 in 227 and 1 in 127, so this is thoroughly great news.  I go in for some additional blood work in two weeks, and we'll get those results about the time of the big anatomy ultrasound on Oct. 11.  But so far, things continue to look great!

14 weeks: The healing

Today marks the second trimester!  I already feel like I've been pregnant forever; I hope the next 24-25 weeks go more quickly.  Now that we're back and busy with schoolwork, I suspect they will.

When Zack first arrived, I was still scarred by the infertility, and his traumatic delivery and refusal to breastfeed made it worse.  I felt like my body kept failing.  The OB who delivered Zack said it would be better "next time," because we'd schedule a c-section.  I didn't want a next time -- I wanted a hysterectomy.  The pediatrician said I could, "breastfeed his sister."  I couldn't imagine a sister -- what were the odds, given how hard it was to get Zack????

But now ... it looks like there will be a next time.  I am sure there are other ways to find healing.  Most infertility veterans are not the urban legends who miraculously become pregnant after treatment.  But for me, the dark times are suddenly very far away.  I thought I would carry these visible scars forever.  But right now, the only visible scar is from the c-section, and that one is pretty ordinary.

Baybee

Ultrasound today at 12w5d; all is well.  Except for the number of times the doctor said, "Given your age...."

Circus tents and muumuus

It's really too bad elastic waistbands and blousy tops aren't (ever, really) in style.  These maternity clothes are soooo comfy.  The nausea has lessened considerably (I'm 11 weeks, 5 days), my skin is no longer completely broken out, and now I can just enjoy being roly-poly.

Wild Horses

I just found that galloping heartbeat on my home doppler for the first time! So exciting -- and a relief since it took a while. Still sick -- and so sick of being sick. I'm ready for this part to end. And I know Brent and Zack are ready to have me back. Soon, I hope!

And we're back...

With an unexpected surprise: I am 9 weeks, 5 days pregnant!

We are overjoyed, and overwhelmed.  Z is nearly 16 months, a tornado of energy, immensely fun and frustrating all at the same time.  Although I don't know where we will summon the energy, it was important to us for Z to have a sibling.  As a friend said to me today, siblings are with you longer than anyone else, longer than parents, longer than spouses.  Z needs that person in his life.  And so we decided to start trying, figuring we'd try on our own, maybe with some drugs, before deciding whether to seek more help from the wizard or consider adoption.

And before I could even take the first dose of Clomid, a positive pregnancy test!  Having never seen one of those without medical help, we're still in a bit of shock.  I didn't even have any pregnancy tests at home, unlike those early days of trying when I was well stocked, sure that this month would be the month.  On a hunch, I sent B out to buy the cheapest ones he could find.  When that second line appeared, I was convinced that it was a false positive.  So I took the other two in the package.  And then I went out and bought a more expensive one.  Four tests later, I called the doctor to get a blood test.  The blood work came back great, better than any of the previous three pregnancies, including the one that brought us Z.

Then we waited.  We were out of town, so the ultrasound was much delayed.  But on Saturday -- and again yesterday -- we saw a healthy, squirmy baby with hands and feet and a strong heartbeat.  Wow.

I felt a bit sheepish at the OB yesterday.  She had clearly reviewed our file and knew Z was an IVF baby.  Her first question was whether this pregnancy was a surprise.  "No.  We were trying."  Then she asked how long.  "Ummm ... basically the first try."  And then I proceeded to stick my foot in my mouth by replying that we wanted that first trimester screening for Down Syndrome because "I'm too old not to."  Yeah, she's the same age and apparently single.  Ooops.  But we liked her and think it'll be a good relationship the next seven months.

One cool moment -- the nurse asked me why I wasn't seeing the midwife again.  I replied that I'd had a c-section with Z.  She said, "Are you sure you don't want to try a VBAC?"  Uh, no, given how scary Z's delivery was.  But I loved that she asked -- a major teaching hospital in a major city actually asking if I wanted to try a VBAC!  Good on them!

This pregnancy already feels so different.  I was anxious every minute of every day of the 38 weeks and 6 days with Z.  But I'm so much calmer this time around.  I wouldn't say I'm confident; I know all too well what can go wrong, and I continue to read devastating news on blogs every day.  But the anxiety is down to more normal levels, which is so nice.  I'm also much queasier, and it started much earlier.  And I'm already in maternity pants!  There will be no keeping this a secret for long!  I "came out" at work today, as we already have to start planning for the spring term.

Z is nearly running everywhere.  He is so close to talking, we can all taste it.  He has several useful signs ("More, please!!!! is common), so communicating is getting easier, although we can't always tell what he wants "more" of.  He loves books and climbing and being outside.  He loves to play ball.  He's a great eater and, usually, a sleeper.  He knows what the rules are ("stay here," "no touch"), and defies them with a maniacal laugh (that's the frustrating part!).  He plays peekaboo and loves to tease.  He regularly stops his frenetic play for a hug.  He basically thinks that every moment of every day is the greatest ever.   We must be doing something right.

Six months

And we're more in love than ever with this amazing little guy:

He is happy and cheerful, loves to laugh, desperately wants to crawl, holds his own bottle, and seems to think he did okay in the mama and daddy department.  He goes down for bed easily, sleeps 6-8 hours at a stretch more often than not, and hates to nap.  He adores the dog, who tolerates him.  He likes sweet potatoes, green beans, and peas.  He tips the scale at 20.5 pounds!

We are exhausted and on illness number 735, or so it seems.  (Love his day care, hate those germs!)  We're not sure how we're going to make it once Daddy starts teaching again in the spring (right now he's part-researcher, part-house husband, which is great!).

There is much swirling about in my head, now that half a year is passed.  Trauma anniversaries tend to be PTSD triggers.  His delivery was certainly traumatic, and the six-month mark has triggered a lot of emotions.  As I lay awake the other night listening to Z cough, I kept flashing back to the operating room and frantically asking the anesthesiologist why he wasn't crying.  I finally had to wake B up to help talk me out of the panic attack.  I'm feeling better in the last few days.  But as we watched the wonderful "Parenthood" last night (if you're not watching it, why not?), and Adam and Kristina welcomed baby Nora, B said, "I want a birth like that."  Me too.

We go back to the wizard in about two weeks.  I am terrified.  I am terrified that we won't be able to get pregnant again (and we're in no position financially or emotionally to do IVF again).  I'm terrified that we will and that pregnancy will be awful.  I'm terrified that we'll have more miscarriages.  I'm terrified of another dreadful delivery.

Six months (Halloween) was my initial target date for breastfeeding.  In those long, painful first eight weeks, when Z refused to nurse, I never imagined we'd make it to this point.  But now he loves it. And nothing is as sweet as those bedtime nursing sessions.  And yet, it's time to start thinking about when to stop.  It seems I'll need to in order to pursue another pregnancy. And pumping at work takes so much time and energy.  Emotionally, though, I'm not sure either one of us is ready to give it up.  And I'm not ready to start buying formula!  I just don't know what the answer is.

Some days, it seems like we're all barely getting by until bedtime.  But those grins and slobbery kisses are so worth it.  He is awesome.

A much delayed announcement: he's here!

Zack joined us at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, weighing in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces.  He made sure his arrival was as dramatic as possible -- back labor (me), irregular heart rate (him), urgent c-section (me), broken arm (him), a trip back to urgent care a week later (me).  But after 36 hours in NICU, he is doing wonderfully.  And after a week of antibiotics, so am I.  He is practically perfect in every way -- especially sleep, thank goodness!  We all just love to stare at him while he smiles in his sleep.  We are hoping the splint comes off his arm Thursday, then our summer of fun can begin!

38 weeks, 2 days: Still hanging on

He's showing no signs of moving out.  I was thankful for the reprieve as I recovered from the stomach flu and got some work taken care of this week.  I have some meetings on Monday; but anytime after that would be great!  So I thought I'd invite you to join in a pool.  When do you think he's joining us?  (No picture - but rest assured, he hasn't dropped.)

37 weeks, 3 days: Late pregnancy funny

For most of the last 35 weeks or so, I've been primarily worried about whether my body could actually grow a healthy baby.  Brent has been worried about whether he'll be a good dad.  But now that Baby's arrival is right around the corner (knock on wood that he'll be healthy!), my anxiety suddenly shifted the other night.  I said to Brent, "What if I don't like him?  What if I don't recognize him?  What if I think we got the wrong baby?  What if this was all a bad idea?"

Brent's reply?

"I'm more worried that he'll get here, and you'll want six more."

37 weeks, 2 days: All Done!

As of two days ago, Baby is fully baked!  And as of last night, I'm done with moot court.  Now there's nothing to do but grade papers ... and wait.  I am definitely ready, but there are no signs that he's ready to make his appearance anytime soon.

36 weeks, 4 days: Happy Birthday Grammy Deb!

Lots of pictures today: two belly shots because I'm not sure the first one really did it justice and some sneak peaks of baby's spaces-in-progress.

35 weeks: Update

Today was a big day: we installed car seats and started packing a hospital bag!  The car seats were fine; the hospital bag freaked me out.  Although there are many things left on the to-do list, we would be ready if we have to be.  In addition to the car seats, we have a cradle and clean sheets and diapers and clean clothes and clean blankets.  He would not be neglected!

But I keep reminding him that he's not allowed to arrive yet.  Despite plenty of Braxton-Hicks contractions (pretty much every time I stand up), my midwife is letting me go two more weeks before my next appointment.  I'm trying to get my grading done, but pregnancy brain is making it challenging.  Everything I do right now, physical or mental, is very, very slooooowwwwww.

34 weeks: Major milestone

According to babycenter.com, "babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine."  This really is the home stretch.  We're not serving the eviction notice quite yet -- 3 1/2 more weeks -- but it's exciting and a huge relief that we've reached healthy baby territory.
